The beam diagnostics system acts as the “sensory organ” of a particle accelerator. Its core function is to measure key beam parameters — intensity, position, profile, size, emittance, and energy spread — in real time with no or minimal disturbance, providing indispensable data for precise commissioning, stable operation, and performance optimization. The system comprises non-intercepting and intercepting probes: beam current transformers (BCT) and wall-current monitors for current and time-structure measurements; beam position monitors (BPM) for orbit tracking; wire scanners or fluorescent screens for transverse profiles; synchrotron-light or diffraction-radiation monitors for non-intercepting observation; and spectrometers for energy measurement and slit or pepper-pot devices for emittance measurement. These detectors work in concert to deliver a comprehensive “health check” of the beam.
